Description
The IJN Amatsukaze, 天津風, or Heavenly Wind was a famed WWII Imperial captained by Japanese Destroyer captained by 原 為一 Hara Tameichi. He was the author of the book Japanese Destroyer Captain which is a fantastic read of the Pacific Theater from Japan's perspective.
I produced this image out of respect for Captain Hara who was an honorable warrior and leader and formidable foe for the US Navy in the South Pacific. The Amatsukaze is one of the ships that went head to head with my father's ship the USS Helena during the war. The Helena was likely the only US warship that took Hara by surprise during the war. Still, he and his ship survived a brutal mauling by the light cruiser and both went on to fight another day.
Captain Hara is the only IJN destroyer Captain that was in command when the war started and survived the war. Had he been higher in the IJN command structure the IJN might well have fared much better against the USN but then Hara was not in favor of attacking the US either.
Captain Hara, I raise my glass to you.
